My Labor Story

Wow, it has been an amazing week. Words can not even begin to express how much love I feel right now.

My labor story:

We arrived at Central Baptist Hospital (Lexington, KY) at 9 p.m. to get checked in for scheduled induction. When we got there, we were notified that they had just had 6 admissions so we would have to come back at 10 p.m. After a quick trip to Mr. Donald's for a final meal (chicken nugget happy meal).

At 10 p.m. I got checked in & was immediately hooked up to iv & had blood drawn. The Laborist then came in the insert Foley Bulb to mechanically dilate my cervix over night. It worked wonderfully & I was dilated to 4 cm by 2 a.m.  It was at that time they began to increase my Pitocin dosage.
Ready

My contractions were coming regularly (every 4-5 mins. apart) & were becoming uncomfortable. I called nurses station to have them call anesthesiologist & at that very moment in walks my nurses & Dr. Looff to break my water (9:00 a.m.).  Dr. Looff informed me that "this is where it will begin to get uncomfortable & will become hard to be kind." Was he ever right! So much so that I informed mom that "...now is not the time to try & be funny..." (I have no clue what was said now tho. haha)  I officially believe that I experienced the longest 40 mins of my life as I wait for my epidural.  But, man was I ever happy & smiling after the anesthesiologist made her pit stop by my room.

Keeping everyone updated -HA!
It was a morning & afternoon of turning from one side to the other, increasing & decreasing Pitocin dosage, & waiting.  Mr. Caleb's little heart was not tolerating induction well, yet I continued to dilate at a normal rate (nurse said I was @ 8 c.m.) Caleb's heart rate just out of control way up and bottomed out Dr. Looff informed nurse over the phone that "baby is just not going to tolerate labor and we need to go to OR & get this baby here."

As we were prep'ed to head to the OR for C-section (Josh dressed & me prep'd/informed, & a full Ceserian dose of anesthetics), Dr. Looff came back into L&D room.  He decided the check me again & was thrilled to here him say "...you're complete & you're going to push this baby out right now..."  Josh went out to get mom for her to join us in L&D.

What was hilarious was I had ZERO control of my body from the high dose of anesthetics. One of the nurses dropped my leg and it slammed the table -I didn't mind, I felt NOTHING. But, it made it hard for me to push for I had NO clue of I was actually pushing enough to get this little squirt here.

After having to be coached when contractions were coming & when to push -after only 4 contractions (approximately 10 mins.) we welcomed Caleb Neil Adams into this world at 3:09 p.m.  As nurses took little man to suction him (b/c he had some Merconium) I was listening for his 1st cry, listening to the nurses comments, listening to Dr. Looff's comments, & I turn to realie Josh (who was a WONDERFUL coach through the entire process) was no longer @ my side but was in the seat white as a ghost. Poor guy! After an orange juice he pulled through & left to go down to escort his mother up to the room.

Caleb Neil was welcomed minutes after by his proud parents, proud grandparents (mom, dad, & Josh's mother), and his great granny.  They allowed us the keep him in L&D for quite a while to enjoy him. Love at 1st sight DOES exist.

Welcome Caleb Neil Adams, 7/27/11, 3:09 p.m., 6 lbs. 4 oz., 20 in. and completely PERFECT!
